All on-vessel positions at Washington State Ferries (WSF) require maritime credentials. If you want to work for WSF but need help covering the cost of getting credentials, you can apply for a scholarship. Applications are now being accepted through May 16, 2025, or until funding is exhausted. More than 50 scholarships will be awarded! Apply early for best consideration. Individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Washington state residents who are part of one of the following groups:
Have previously been in foster care.
Are formerly incarcerated or a youth involved in the justice system.
Are housing insecure.
Are women.
In a minority group.
Are Tribal members.
Are veterans.
Are facing a life hardship (include this information in the application essay portion).
WHAT IS COVERED?
Fees associated with obtaining the credentials required to apply for an on-vessel position at Washington State Ferries. This includes, but may not be limited to:
Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
Physical examination
Drug screening
HOW TO APPLY
Select a participating organization from the webpage and ask them for an estimate.
Complete the Maritime Credential Scholarship application on the webpage and email it to maritimetradeprep@wsdot.wa.gov.
Watch your email for a response approving or denying your application. We do our best to respond within 10 business days. We will notify you and your selected organization.
